Offering best-in-class security intelligence services is one more way that Brosnan is establishing ourselves as the best security guard company in NYC. The Bi-Weekly Brosnan New York City Crime Brief is a great example of the type of Intelligence as a Service reports that we offer to our clients throughout the United States. At Brosnan Risk Consultants (BRC), we believe that access to actionable security intelligence is an integral cornerstone of a good security plan. This Brosnan Risk Consultants’ (BRC) bi-weekly crime brief covers the period from August 23rd through September 5th, 2021. The brief compares year-to-date statistics in 2021 with figures collected from 2020 and compares the most current weekly data in the areas of New York City specific to the business interests of BRC. We tailor our brief to areas of New York City specific to our business interests to inform and assist clients in their ongoing NY security planning.
Additionally, the brief includes analysis of all data by BRC subject matter experts from the NYPD’s Detectives’ Endowment Association, Inc., the FBI and the CIA. The source of the data examined is the NYPD’s CompStat Unit.
Year-to-date crime figures indicate the NYPD is gaining back some control as crime dropped once again by 16% in the seven major crime categories when compared with last year’s annual data. Gun violence however remains quite alarming as New York City endured 25 homicides caused by 76 shootings. Drilling deeper though the data reveals that rapes, robberies and felony assaults have fallen off significantly over the last two weeks, contributing to the overall crime drop. Grand and petit thefts have also lessened, with only misdemeanor assaults and subway crimes marking steady upticks. However, there are continuing issues with the NYC Courts not processing enough criminal cases across all five boroughs. As of the end of August, they have revealed that they have only rendered 18 criminal verdicts in the first half of 2021.
As crime and theft rates continue to climb, private and commercial businesses throughout NYC should strongly consider hiring a company that provides security guard services and also specializes in loss prevention services.
New York City businesses should develop and implement a security plan. It also may also make sense to research and potentially invest in better locks, safes, rolling gates and alarm systems from trusted security vendors and manufacturers.
Our job as NYC Security Professionals is to deter petty crime and keep our clients' employees safe from criminal activity. We are one of the few New York City Security Guard companies offering cutting edge Security Intelligence Services to our clients.
In the borough of Manhattan South (below 59th Street) crime numbers maintained an upward trend at +23% combined in two weeks as 574 major crimes were reported, including 2 incidents of gunfire. Sex-related crimes exploded over the last seven days with 34 new cases representing a +209% jump. Felony assaults rose +92% with 79 new complaints filed and a whopping 339 grand larceny cases rolling into Detective Squads in just fourteen days, backed up by 538 petit theft incidents.
The 1st Police Precinct reported a net crime increase of +76% over the two-week period with hikes in residential burglaries, grand and petit thefts, and misdemeanor assaults taking responsibility for the surging numbers.
The 10th Precinct reported conflicting weeks being down –14% in week one and getting pounded in week two recording a +90% increase. The spike in week two was driven by significant moves in felony assaults +300%, grand larcenies +225% and a +43% jump in minor assaults. Robberies and petit thefts were significantly down over the last two weeks and overall, the 10th Precinct has driven crime down –12% year-to-date.
The Midtown South Precinct (MTS) remains problematic as crime rose +134% caused by 115 new major crimes. Year-to-date, MTS has recorded 1,748 major crimes and the yearly crime rate is +41% higher than 2020. Huge hikes in robberies +500%, felony assaults +600% and burglaries +450% were recorded in just the last seven days. Much of the crime being experienced by MTS can be attributed to increasing street narcotics activity and the lack of appropriate undercover narcotics operations by the NYPD.
The Midtown North Precinct (MTN) averaged 39 major crimes weekly as the rate rose +59%. MTN was up in all the major crime classes except murder. Minor assaults and petit thefts also marked significant hikes.
Above 59th Street, the borough of Manhattan North registered a -24% drop in overall crime despite 12 shootings, 4 murders and 14 people being wounded. MTN was down in all the major crime categories, but upticks were recorded in subway crime +25%, sex-related crimes +42% and misdemeanor assaults +23%.
In the Hamilton Heights section of Harlem, the 30th Precinct experienced a +128% spike in crime over the two-week span. Increases in street robberies, felony assaults, residential burglaries and grand larcenies contributed to the spike. Already short-staffed, Detectives assigned to the 30th Squad are backlogged with the volume of new cases coming in for investigation.
On the Upper East Side (UES), the 19th Precinct continues to drive crime down with a two-week drop of –47% despite an uncharacteristic shooting incident. Minor increases in misdemeanor assaults and petit larcenies were offset by significant drops in all the major crimes classes over the fourteen-day look back.
The 23rd Precinct had no change in the crime rate over the two-week stretch recording 42 major crimes. The 23rd was down in most categories with a minor uptick recorded in residential burglaries that Detectives attribute to people returning to work, or out and about most of the day due to the warm weather.
On the Upper West Side (UWS), the 20th Precinct recorded a net drop of –27% with only 38 major crimes filed. The Precinct was down in all the major classes except grand larceny. Special Victims Detectives are concerned with a 300% spike in sex-related crimes, and minor assaults marked a slight uptick. Year-to-date, the 20th is trending at +21% with 657 major crime reports.
On the northern end of the UWS, the 24th Precinct tallied –41% fewer crimes in the fourteen-day stretch. In week two, 2 victims were wounded in the same shooting but drops in all the major crimes categories were realized. Year-to-date, the 24th command is +900% higher in hate crimes with a total of 10 incidents.
Moving north near Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, the 44th Precinct turned things around, reducing crime by –24% over the last two weeks. The neighborhood experienced 3 homicides caused by 3 shootings, however significant drops in robberies, burglaries and grand larcenies helped offset minor upticks in other crime categories.
In south Corona, Queens, the 110th Precinct recorded a net +18% hike in crime. The spike was rooted in a higher volume of robberies, felony assaults, residential burglaries and grand larcenies compared with last year’s figures. Petit larcenies made an impact, jumping up +247% with 93 new complaints filed in just two weeks.
In Forest Hills, the 112th Precinct recorded conflicting weeks, beating crime by –63% in week one only to rise +33% the following week. In week one, the 112th saw a record-low 6 major crimes and dips in all the major categories. The following week crime stats surged +33% overall with grand larceny cases causing the difference.
The 114th Precinct in Astoria knocked crime down –19% in week one only to see it return in week two by +31%. Eighteen grand larcenies (+39%) and 17 stolen autos (+183%) helped push the crime needle in week two.
Borough Violence Report:
Bronx violence erupted once again with 11 murders, 23 shooting incidents as well as spikes in rapes and felony assaults. Year-to-date, the Bronx tallied 105 homicides (+40%), 360 acts of gunfire (+36%) and 322 wounded (+33%). The Bronx has been by far deadliest borough.
Brooklyn South recorded 1 murder and 6 acts of gunplay last week. Robberies and rapes fell while felony and minor assaults climbed.
Brooklyn North mirrored the South with 1 murder and 5 shootings in seven days. The borough’s shooting and murder rates have fallen off compared with the same time last year. The same could be said for robberies and rapes, however 84 felony assaults were reported causing a +15% spike.
Manhattan South experienced no gun violence last week; however street robberies grew +111% in seven days with 38 new cases filed and felony assaults surged +50% with 42 victims filing reports.
In Manhattan North, 8 victims suffered gunshot wounds and 1 was murdered during 6 separate shootings in the past week. Significantly fewer rapes, robberies and felony assaults were filed. Year-to-date, Manhattan North has +26% more acts of gunfire with 153 incidents.
Queens South erupted with 4 shooting incidents causing 1 murder and wounding 5 others. Year-to-date, murders climbed +21% and shootings have jumped +12%, with 34 and 129, respectively. Northern Manhattan has also notched 60 hates crimes this year, representing a +173% jump over 2020 data.
Cops in Queens North have quietly reduced their murder and shooting rates by –9% and –10%, respectively. Street robberies have declined while felony assaults jumped +18% caused by 39 incidents in the last seven days.
Staten Island had 2 shootings last week, however overall gun violence on the island is down by –7% and the murder rate declined –27%. Robberies and rapes had fewer cases reported while felony assaults remained unchanged.
The upward crime trend in recent weeks seems to be in reverse which is a positive sign. However, I’d characterize the crime situation as “fragile,” with demagogues and other rabble rousers just waiting in the wings, ready to pounce on the next controversial police incident. Despite improving stats, we appear to be living in some-sort-of a “bubble of anger and hate,” which plays out in gun violence and other forms of assault substantiated by the data.
