The Bi-Weekly Brosnan NYC Crime Brief is a great example of the type of Intelligence as a Service reports that we offer to our clients throughout the United States. At Brosnan Risk Consultants (BRC), we believe that access to actionable security intelligence is an integral cornerstone of a good security plan. This Brosnan Risk Consultants (BRC) crime brief covers the period in New York City from April 19th through May 2nd, 2021. The brief compares year-to-date statistics in 2021 with figures collected from 2020 and compares the most current weekly data in the areas of New York City specific to the business interests of BRC.

Additionally, the brief includes analysis of all data by BRC subject matter experts from the NYPD’s Detectives’ Endowment Association, Inc., the FBI and the CIA. The source of the data examined is the NYPD’s CompStat Unit.

As of May 2nd, 2021, year-to-date figures are showing a city spiraling out of control week after week with increasing crime and violence. New York City is up +17% in murders and +83% in shooting incidents when compared to this point last year. Hate crimes have also skyrocketed by +67% with 169 acts of hate reported compared with 101 last year. During the recent two-week period, crime rose in the seven major crime classes by +17% and +33% respectively. During the last fourteen days 24 murders caused by 88 acts of gunfire have been reported city-wide and crime is up in every crime category except burglaries which fell –30%.

Understandably, it’s difficult to grasp the lawlessness taking place in our city by simply reading statistics, however personally experiencing the lack of regard for the law is a real eye-opener. This week I was in mid-town Manhattan in the early evening when I witnessed a gang of individuals on motorcycles demonstrate a complete disregard for the law and the safety of pedestrians by taking their motorcycles to the sidewalks sending people diving for cover screaming in fear of their life. Moreover, I observed countless homeless encounters as brazen homeless individuals got right up in the faces of pedestrians to demand money. The best way to describe what is going on is “unmitigated lawlessness” as criminals have no fear of the police or the criminal justice system.

security-guard-company-in-NYCAs crime and theft rates continue to climb, retail businesses throughout NYC should strongly consider hiring a company that provides security guard services and also specializes in loss prevention services.

As part of a retail store's security plan, it also may make sense to research and invest in better locks, safes, rolling gates and alarm systems from trusted security vendors and manufacturers.

When planned for accordingly, so much can be done to keep employees and inventory safe from criminal behavior.

Analysis of Crime Statistics Impact to Brosnan's Clients

Below 59th Street, crime jumped +128% combined over the last two weeks. Sex related crimes continue to explode as Manhattan South recorded an +825% hike in rapes and other sex crimes over the last seven days. Street robberies, assaults and hate crimes are trending at alarming rates.
The 1st Precinct reported a crime hike of +28% with thefts increasing by +614% due to 54 new cases for the two-week lookback.

The 10th Precinct watched crime rise +63% in fourteen days with hikes in rapes, robberies and grand larcenies leading the way. On a good note, felony assaults and burglaries fell by respective figures.
Midtown South Precinct (MTS) had two more difficult weeks as crime rose +137% and +115% respectively. MTS recorded increases in all crime categories of violence including Asian Hate Crimes.
Midtown North Precinct (MTN) also experienced crime hikes totaling +198% combined in the last two weeks. Driving the spikes were increases in rapes +200%, robberies +400% and thefts +1,560% due to 85 new complaints being filed in just fourteen days.

Crime grew in Manhattan above 59th Street by +60% combined in two weeks including 7 homicides and 15 shootings. Year-to-date the northern section of Manhattan has recorded 19 murders and 59 acts of gunfire which is +103% more than 2020. Two hate-crimes occurred against Asians on the subway platform at 125th Street and Lexington Ave. Twenty-six robberies, 136 assaults and 345 theft complaints were filed in the last seven days. Detectives assigned to Detective Squads in Manhattan North are juggling huge caseloads as the investigations continue to pour in.

The 30th Precinct in Hamilton Heights had declining crime numbers in week one by –29% but experienced a rate hike of +114% the next week. During week two, felony assaults and grand larcenies drove the numbers including 2 acts of gunfire.

On the Upper East Side (UES) the 19th Precinct crime stats rose +81% combined in fourteen days with 1 murder, a shooting and a hate crime. Grand and petit larcenies were significantly higher and assaults rose +217% compared with the same period last year. On a positive note, commercial and residential burglaries, which plagued this command, fell noticeably.

The 23rd Command recorded a +183% jump in crime over the last two weeks, being noticeably up in all classifications including 1 shooting. Between April 26th and May 2nd felony assaults rose +267% and misdemeanor assaults jumped +1,000% with 22 new incidents reported in seven days. Detectives at the 23rd Precinct informed me that many of the assault cases are random attacks making it difficult to identify the suspect.

On the Upper West Side (UWS), the 20th Precinct had a +98% crime rate increase over the two-week lookback including one hate crime. The real driver of crime on UWS has been grand and petit larcenies with 33 new complaints filed for a +296% hike compared with last year. Investigators believe a sense of entitlement combined with the lack of consequences is responsible for the number of thefts being committed.

The 24th Command witnessed crime increase by +110% with 1 shooting and spikes in every crime category including 36 new cases of theft reported.

Moving east into the Bronx near Yankee Stadium, 44th Precinct crime steadily rose by +30% weekly including 5 shooting incidents. Street robberies, felony assaults and grand larcenies led the way in both weeks.

In Queens, the 110th Precinct reported crime rising by +65% and +14% respectively over the two-week review. In week one, 1 shooting and 2 hate crimes occurred while larcenies rose +1,600%. The following week 9 street robberies +200%, and hikes in petit larcenies and minor assaults played a role in the rate increase.
The 112th Command in Forest Hills reported rate hikes of +217% in week one and +160% in week two. Grand thefts +750% and minor assaults +400% led the way in both weeks. Criminal’s fearless entitlement is evident in this generally quiet neighborhood.

In Astoria, the 114th Precinct crime rate jumped by +94% over the fourteen-day period. The command was up noticeably in most crime classes, but thefts and felony assaults really drove the crime during the two-week lookback.

Borough Violence Report:

Reports show that shootings and murders are on the rise throughout New York City. If you operate a business in the Five Boroughs, protecting your business, employees and customers should be on your priority list. Most security professionals recommend having a security plan in place and consulting with the best security guard company in NYC that you can find. The borough violence report shows the following:

Lawlessness resides in the Bronx as 26 shootings resulted in 5 murders in just fourteen days. Street robberies went up +81% with 76 cases reported, however rapes and felony assaults declined. Year-to-date the Bronx recorded 36 homicides and 126 acts of gunfire, which is +125% higher than 2020.

Brooklyn South violence amounted to 18 shootings, 5 homicides and 5 hate crimes over the two-week lookback. Year-to-date, Brooklyn South recorded 60 shooting incidents, which is +140% higher than last year and 20 hate crimes.

Brooklyn North violence continues to spike with 19 shootings recorded in fourteen days. Rapes, robberies and felony assaults were on the rise the last two weeks with 2 hate crimes reported.

In Manhattan South (below 59th Street) crime is out of control with 50 hate crimes reported year-to-date. On the weekly review, huge hikes in rapes, robberies, felony assaults and minor assaults threaten New Yorker’s safety. The randomness of the assaults has New Yorkers on edge and thinking twice about visiting New York City.

In the northern section of Manhattan, 15 shootings and 7 murders ruled the two-week review period. Manhattan North recorded 104 felony assaults and 4 hate crimes. Year-to-date Manhattan North is up +103% in gunfire with 59 new incidents and 19 murders compared with 2020 figures.

Southern Queens sustained 6 acts of gunfire and 3 murders in fourteen days. Rapes, felony assaults and robberies are mounting compared with 2020 data. Year-to-date, Queens South has recorded 16 murders representing a +129% hike and 36 shootings, also up from last year.

Queens North recorded 3 murders with 2 shooting incidents and 5 Asian hate crimes. Robberies and assaults continue to rise weekly, and the borough has 27 hate crimes reported which is +287% higher than 2020 figures.

Staten Island violence continues to plague residents of the Island as 2 shootouts caused 1 murder bringing the annual total to 6. The borough recorded 9 felony assaults, 3 rapes and 7 robberies in two weeks.

Crime Trends and Forecasts

Unfortunately, our forecasting has been on the mark and each day in our city is turning into a “crime spree”. The volume of forcible robberies and thefts is catching up to the daily violence in most areas of the five boroughs, sending crime statistics in the seven major categories soaring. Hate crimes against Asian people have exploded so much that the NYPD has created a special “sub-unit” within the Hate Crime Unit just to investigate assaults on Asians.

Dominating the headlines at the time of this writing is a random shooting in Times Square that took place in broad daylight on Saturday afternoon as the flying bullets struck three innocent bystanders, one being a 4-year-old girl. You ask, "what's the forecast looking like”? As one law enforcement official mentioned to me, “crime and violence is off the charts and the summer hasn’t even started”.
