The Bi-Weekly Brosnan NYC Crime Brief is a great example of the type of Intelligence as a Service reports that we offer to our clients throughout the United States. At Brosnan Risk Consultants (BRC), we believe that access to actionable security intelligence is an integral cornerstone of a good security plan. This Brosnan Risk Consultants (BRC) crime brief covers the period in New York City from May 3rd through May 16th, 2021. The brief compares year-to-date statistics in 2021 with figures collected from 2020 and compares the most current weekly data in the areas of New York City specific to the business interests of BRC.

Additionally, the brief includes analysis of all data by BRC subject matter experts from the NYPD’s Detectives’ Endowment Association, Inc., the FBI and the CIA. The source of the data examined is the NYPD’s CompStat Unit.

As of May 21st, 2021,year-to-date overall crime is down -4% across the five boroughs but unfortunately the trend is racing in the opposite direction at lightning speed. To put my last sentence into clearer perspective, crime was down, city-wide, –24% on March 15th and has spiraled down to –4% in just two short months. Increasing crime trends are steadily wiping out crime fighting gains as all the major crime categories push in a positive direction especially in areas of Manhattan dense with BRC clientele. Most troubling, homicides and shootings are way up this year compared with last, keeping in mind that 2020 was considerably higher than 2019. Grand and petit thefts are skyrocketing in all five boroughs and crime in the subway system is rising with the ridership.

Over the last two weeks, overall crime was up +22% each week including 17 murders caused by 75 shooting incidents and 18 hate crimes. Street robberies are trending at +64% weekly with 505 robberies reported in fourteen days. An astounding 4,347 grand and petit larcenies were reported in just two weeks, indicating that thieves are fearlessly acting with impunity. Quietly, stolen vehicles continue to plague car owners as 433 autos disappeared in the last two weeks bringing the annual total to 3,036.

security-guard-company-against-anti-semitismAs crime and theft rates continue to climb, retail businesses throughout NYC should strongly consider hiring a company that provides security guard services and also specializes in loss prevention services.

As part of a retail store's security plan, it also may make sense to research and invest in better locks, safes, rolling gates and alarm systems from trusted security vendors and manufacturers.

When planned for accordingly, so much can be done to keep employees and inventory safe from criminal behavior.

Analysis of Crime Statistics Impact to Brosnan's Clients

Crime below 59th Street increased +147% combined over the last two weeks being up in every crime class except commercial burglaries. Violence gripped lower Manhattan with 4 shootings and a homicide over the last fourteen days. Soaring street robberies, assaults and thefts contributed to Manhattan South’s crime rise.

The 1st Precinct, covering the Seaport and the Wall Street area, watched crime rise +110% last week compared with last year’s figures at this time. Grand and petit thefts jumped to the tune of +650% and +322% respectively. An uptick in street robberies was also recorded.

The Midtown South Precinct (MTS) covers 29th Street north to 45th Street and from 9th Avenue east to Lexington Ave. MTS recorded a shocking +471% crime explosion in the last fourteen days compared with the same two-week period last year with 67 major crimes reported in the last seven days. During the two-week stretch, this command recorded a murder, a rape and 2 shootings. Street robberies, felony assaults, misdemeanor assaults, grand larcenies and petit thefts were up at alarming rates causing New Yorkers and visitors great concern and Detectives buried in investigations.

Midtown North Precinct (MTN) didn’t fare much better recording higher crime by +301% combined over the two-week span. Drilling deeper into the weekly analysis, grand larcenies jumped +733%, petit larcenies rose +291% and misdemeanor assaults increased by +250% in week one. The following week the trend continued as hikes in grand and petit thefts jumped off the paper, stolen cars rose +300% and a +400% spike was measured in subway crime. The crime occurring in the transit system is a true indicator of what to expect as we proceed into the summer months combined with ridership returning as Covid gets further back in our rear-view mirror.

The borough of Manhattan North recorded two weeks of rising crime figures thanks to 4 shootings, 1 homicide and over 400 major crimes reported. During week one, robberies, grand larcenies and assaults increased and the boroughs 23rd hate crime was committed. The following week 3 additional hate crimes were recorded along with major hikes in robberies, assaults, and larcenies.

In Harlem the 30th Precinct reduced crime by –27% in week one but it returned the following week, rising +25% over last year’s data. Felony and misdemeanor assaults drove the crime spike in week two.

On the Upper East Side (UES) the 19th Precinct was down –28% in week one with petit thefts being the only crime category showing an increase. The following week crime spiked +15% with felony assaults and stolen autos leading the spike. One hate crime was recorded and burglaries declined.

The 23rd Precinct recorded conflicting weeks being down –32% in week one and up +77% the next. Despite the crime reduction in week one, the precinct recorded 1 homicide caused by a shooting. Week two yielded another shooting and increases in street robberies, assaults and thefts.

On the Upper West Side (UWS) the 20th Precinct is struggling as crime rose +171% in week one and +44% the next. Thefts went through the roof with a +550% jump in grand larcenies and petit larcenies rising +233% in week one. The following week thefts rose an additional +260% combined.

The 24th Precinct, patrolling the northern part of the UWS, recorded a +300% crime hike during the two-week stretch as each crime category recorded higher numbers compared with the same two weeks last year. Grand and petit larcenies took responsibility for most of the increase.

Moving into the Bronx, the 44th Precinct recorded hikes of +6% and +28% in successive weeks. Eight people were injured as a result of 7 shooting incidents with one person succumbing to his gunshot wounds. This command recorded 80 major crimes during the stretch with street robberies leading the way. On a good note, burglaries had only a minor uptick when compared with last year and thefts tailed off as well.

In south Corona, Queens, the 110th Precinct recorded hikes of +21% and +32% in successive weeks with one hate crime. In week two, felony assaults, grand larcenies and stolen vehicles claimed responsibility for the spike. Petit larcenies and minor assaults were noticeably higher than last year at this point.

In Forest Hills, the generally quiet 112th command recorded +173% higher crime than last year during this two-week stretch. Consistent with crime trends city-wide, larcenies and assaults are rising off the charts in Forest Hills. One hate crime was reported in week two and under investigation by Detectives.

In Astoria, the 114th Precinct’s crime rate continues to grow with a +141% spike in the last fourteen days. From May 3rd through May 9th sex-related crimes, thefts and assaults were responsible for the increase in crime. During week two, violence erupted with a murder caused by gunfire and huge spikes in felony assaults and burglaries +400%. Higher grand and petit larceny crimes were recorded as well.

Borough Violence Report:

Reports continue to show that shootings and murders are on the rise throughout New York City. If you operate a business in the Five Boroughs, protecting your business, employees and customers should be on your priority list. As gun violence in NYC continues to rise, most security professionals recommend having a security plan in place and consulting with the best security guard company in NYC that you can find. The borough violence report shows the following:

Violence continues to light-up the Bronx with 30 new shooting incidents in fourteen days causing 7 homicides bringing the annual totals to 46 murders and 156 shootouts injuring 178 New Yorkers. Other crimes of violence reported were 118 robberies, 8 rapes and 229 felony assaults.

Brooklyn South reported 8 shootings, 1 murder and 2 hate crimes over the two-week span. Year-to-date this borough has recorded 21 murders caused by 67 acts of gunfire. Robberies, felony assaults and rapes all recorded higher figures than last year at this time.

The borough of Brooklyn North had a bloody two weeks as 18 shootings erupted causing 4 murders bringing the yearly total to 113 shootings and 26 homicides. Brooklyn North has also recorded 23 hate crimes this year so far. The borough is averaging 45 street robberies per week.

Manhattan South experienced 4 acts of gunfire and a homicide during the two-weeks under review. Robberies, felony assaults and sex related crimes are all higher than last year and the borough has recorded 55 hate crimes.

North of 59th Street violence is also on the rise as Manhattan North reported one homicide, 5 shootings and 4 hate crimes. Year-to-date the borough has 25 hate crimes, 20 murders and 64 shooting incidents.
Queens South had two violent weeks as 9 shootings erupted causing 2 homicides. Felony assaults (105 cases) and robberies (49 cases) had significant increases over last year’s figures.

The northern section of Queens logged a murder, a shooting and 2 hate crimes during the two-week span. The two-week total for felony assaults and street robberies was 74 and 46 respectively. Year-to-date Queens North has 29 hate crimes which is up from only 8 last year representing a +263% increase. The NYPD’s Hate Crime Unit is giving this area special attention.

In Staten Island, gun violence calmed down over the last fourteen days as did felony assaults. The borough recorded slight upticks in robberies and minor assaults. Year-to-date Staten Island has reported 6 murders, 12 shootings and 7 hate crimes, all considerably higher than stats from last year.

Crime Trends and Forecasts

Weekly, crime is trending northbound in all the major crime categories and erupting gun violence has New Yorkers on high alert. Hate crimes have risen +71% with 191 incidents reported versus only 112 last year by this date. Due to the avalanche of Asian related biased activity, the NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force has established a sub-unit to focus solely on attacks against Asian people.

Anti-Jewish hate crimes are also on the rise given the unrest between Israel and Hamas. Transit crime is rising all over the city and as ridership in the subway system increases, so does the victim pool. At the time of this writing the lead press story was about a subway rider being shot in the abdomen during an attempted robbery on a train platform when he resisted the robber's demands. The injured victim struggled with the thief, wrestled the gun away and shot the robber twice. Fellow straphangers interceded and held onto the perpetrator until police arrived. Experiences such as this are becoming too common and is what the forecast looks like for the upcoming summer. Criminals have a sense of liberation and feel they can act fearlessly with impunity knowing the revolving door of justice is the only consequence.
